Which dogs suit a trailer

A trailer suits any dog who cannot or should not run alongside a bike: short-nosed breeds who overheat, older dogs, puppies whose joints are still growing, and dogs recovering from injury. It also suits a fit dog on a long ride, letting her run the first stretch and travel the rest. A spacious dog bike trailer covers most medium breeds comfortably.

Measuring for headroom

Height is the measurement people skip. A dog in a moving trailer sits up to look out, so measure from the floor to the top of her head sitting, as well as her length lying down, and check those against the internal cabin size. The stated weight limit describes the frame, floor and hitch rather than the space inside. The premium bike trailer is the roomier option for a tall dog.

Suspension, wheels and hitches

Twenty-inch air-filled wheels, a sprung rear axle and a hitch that pivots in two planes are what separate a trailer you can take on gravel from one that belongs on a cycle path. Quick-release wheels decide whether it fits in the boot. The SEPNINE 2-in-1 for large dogs uses a reinforced frame for the heaviest loads.

Training and first rides

Introduce the trailer parked, with the doors open and her blanket inside, and build up over a week or two to a short, slow ride on a quiet path. Clip the internal tether to a harness rather than a collar. A 2-in-1 trailer and pram lets you do all of that in pram mode first, which takes the bike out of the equation entirely.

Trailers, prams and joggers

Buying one frame that does two or three jobs saves money and cupboard space. The 3-in-1 trailer tows, pushes and takes a jogging wheel. If you only ever push, the lighter options are in pet strollers, and for a pet small enough to lift there are carriers and backpacks.

Dog bike trailers: your questions answered

What size bike trailer does my dog need?

Measure her lying down from chest to the base of the tail, and sitting up from the floor to the top of the head, then compare both with the internal cabin dimensions rather than the outside of the trailer. Dogs sit up far more than they lie down once the trailer is moving, so headroom decides comfort. The weight limit is a structural rating for the frame, floor and hitch, not a fitting guide, which is why a stocky dog can be within the limit and still short of space. A premium bike trailer gives a taller dog room to sit properly, and the SEPNINE 2-in-1 for large dogs takes the heaviest loads in this range.

Do I really need suspension on a dog bike trailer?

On smooth cycle paths you can live without it. Anywhere else you cannot, because a trailer sits low and takes every kerb, root and pothole with no rider to soak it up, and the dog feels all of it. Look for a sprung rear axle, wheels of 20 inches or more with air-filled tyres, and a hitch that pivots in two planes so the trailer stays level when the bike leans. The premium bike trailer is the one built for gravel and forest tracks, and quick-release wheels make it far easier to store between rides.

How do I get my dog used to a bike trailer?

In stages, over a week or two, with the trailer standing still to begin with. Park it in the garden with the doors open and her own blanket and treats inside, let her wander in and out, then feed a meal in it, then close the door briefly, then push it a few metres by hand. Only then attach the bike, and make the first ride five slow minutes on a quiet path. Clip the internal tether to a harness, never a collar. A 2-in-1 trailer and pram makes this easier, because you can do the whole introduction in pram mode, and a wide front opening is much less daunting than a low hatch she has to duck through.

How fast can I cycle with a dog trailer?

Slower than you would ride alone, and most manufacturers advise keeping to around 15 to 25 km per hour. The trailer cuts inside your line through a corner, your braking distance grows with the extra weight, and a low trailer is hard for drivers to see, so fit the flag and take junctions carefully. Check the hitch bolt and wheel pins before each ride. Heat matters as much as speed in summer, because a closed cabin sits just above hot tarmac, so ride early or late, open the mesh panels on a 3-in-1 trailer and carry water. If you drive to the start of the route, restrain her properly for that leg with something from dog car seats and travel.

Can a bike trailer be used as a pram?

Yes, if it is one of the converting models, and that is what most people here actually buy. The PawHut 2-in-1 bike trailer and pram swaps the hitch arm for a pram handle in seconds, and the 3-in-1 adds a jogging wheel on top of that. Converting frames are heavier than a pram-only one because they are built for road speed, so if you never intend to cycle, a lighter model from pet strollers will be easier to push and to fold away.
