Quando la temperatura sale, un cane non può liberarsene sudando. Riconoscere subito il colpo di calore

Il colpo di calore è un'emergenza, non semplicemente un brutto pomeriggio. I primi segnali sono ansimare intenso e frenetico, saliva densa, gengive rosso vivo, battito accelerato e un cane che rallenta, barcolla o sembra confuso. Vomito, diarrea e collasso arrivano in seguito. Se noti uno di questi sintomi, interrompi ciò che stai facendo, porta il cane all'ombra, versagli acqua fresca sul corpo, offrigli piccoli sorsi e contatta immediatamente il veterinario. Non aspettare per vedere se passa e non usare acqua ghiacciata. Le razze brachicefale, i cani in sovrappeso, i cuccioli e i cani anziani cedono più rapidamente; anche i gatti ne sono colpiti, ma lo nascondono molto meglio. Cooling mats indoors

Put the mat where your dog already chooses to lie in summer, which is usually the coolest hard floor in the house rather than the bed. Pools and water play

Food and water in summer

Wet food spoils quickly in a warm kitchen, so serve smaller portions more often or use the six-meal feeder with a cooling pack so a meal is not left standing all afternoon. How does a cooling mat for dogs work?

By conduction, which is why it needs no freezer, no power and no water. The gel inside draws heat out of your dog's body and spreads it across the mat, then resets on its own after fifteen to twenty minutes with nothing lying on it. Can I leave my dog in the car with a window open?

No. A parked car heats up far faster than the air outside and an open window makes very little difference, so on a mild summer day the inside can pass 45 degrees within an hour. Dogs pant rather than sweat and have almost no defence against that, so leave your dog at home instead. If you have to travel in the heat, drive early or late, take water with you from bowls, feeders and water and put a cooling mat on the seat.
How big should a dog paddling pool be?

Big enough for your dog to turn round in comfortably and shallow enough to stand in, which usually means water at chest height rather than deeper. Check the stated diameter against your dog's length rather than guessing, and remember that two dogs need more room than one. Do cooling vests for dogs really help?

What are the signs of heatstroke in a dog?

Heavy, frantic panting, thick drool, bright red gums, a racing heart, and a dog who slows down, stumbles or seems confused. Vomiting, diarrhoea and collapse come later and mean it is already serious. Heatstroke is an emergency: move your dog into shade, pour cool water over the body, offer small drinks and contact your vet immediately rather than waiting to see whether it passes, and do not use ice water. Prevention is shade, water and a shorter walk, helped along by a cooling mat indoors and a shaded dog pool outside.
